Shay Zilberman - The Akhnif
Brief exhibition description: Israeli artist Shay Zilberman presents his new work, The Akhnif, a contemporary interpretation of the 19th-century cape worn by Jewish men in the southern Atlas Mountains. His new cape, a sculptural object as well as an item of clothing, examines relationships between identity, body, and place. Traditionally, men wore this cape inside-out to mark their Jewish identity according to local laws. Zilberman’s version is covered with mirror armor hand-sewn onto the cloth, referring to the legendary theme of the wandering Jew, with its reflections alluding to the many chapters of Jewish history when the wearer needed to blend into their environment.
