Upon Thy Gates

Elaine and Norman Winik collected mezuzahs throughout their travels. They bequeathed their collection of 169 mezuzahs to the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education in 2017. Upon Thy Gates highlights 73 pieces from the collection showcasing an eclectic range of styles, materials and Jewish symbols found in mezuzahs around the world. They date from the late 18th to the 21st century, including traditional European and Northern African examples as well as the work of contemporary artists. A mezuzah crafted by a young woman imprisoned in Theresienstadt (who was later murdered in Auschwitz) stands out as especially poignant.
